A Callous Heart

Description

"I ask, tender and tiny child, do you live so poorly?

In a hut made of grass that trembles in a breeze

Your clothes hang torn and wrinkled

Your tiny feet and hands are calloused so young"

The child turns her dirty face so clean with innocence

"This hut is my home and I need no other

Do we both not share the same home, under one sky?

My clothing and food are mother nature's lavish gift

Do you not have her fine linens and drink her nectar as well?

My hands and feet are calloused, but with fruitful work

Are not your callouses one of labor? Or do they cover your eyes instead?

Most likely one of the most meaningful shots I've caught to date. This really shows life in San Juan. They live in huts made of bamboo and thatched grass roofs. Their diets vary from what animals they catch, including iguanas. The children, more often than not, wear the same outfits day after day. I don't think I saw one child ever wearing shoes the entire time. Do you feel sad for them? Well then stop right there. Honestly, those were some of the happiest kids I've ever seen. Not only were they grateful for everything we gave them, but they found such joy in such small things like bubbles and granola bars. Life is taken one day at a time there. I realized alot on this trip and one of them was that the world isn't just ipods, cellphones, internet, etc. If anything, all of those things are just items that suck such precious time from us. We relish unfeeling wires instead of human relationships. These people have very little by our living standards, but they are certainly much richer by other ones. Here's where the sad part begins to come into play though. Februrary I went and they had no power, no nothing really. This time, they had generators that ran lights and a T.V. I believe that within the next decade or so, the culture of San Juan will slowly begin to disappear until there is nothing left. What will bubbles be then? Nothing but water mixed with soap.

Meaningful shot, yes, and a meaningful write-up to go with it. I love reading your descriptions. It's just like we say, the birds of the air don't worry about what to eat, yet they're well-fed, and the flowers of the field don't worry about what to wear, yet they're clothed in splendor. It's no wonder that little girl looks happy! :D
